The Athens Baba Group Library

Charlie Gard'ner wanted all to know that the Athens video library now contains  the DVD entitled "The Message."  It is the story of the life of the Prophet Mohammed. To view the DVD or check it out from the library, please contact Charlie Gard'ner at 706-546-6492.

Here's an overview of the movie from Barnes & Noble:

"This handsomely-mounted historical epic concerns the birth of the Islamic faith and the story of the prophet Mohammed -- who, in accordance with the tenants of Islam, is never seen or heard any physical depiction of the prophet is considered a heinous sin within the faith. In Mecca in the 7th century, Mohammed is visited by a vision of the Angel Gabriel, who urges him to lead the people of Mecca to cast aside the 300 idols of Kaaba and instead worship the one true God. Speaking out against the corrupt political and military leaders who rule Mecca, Mohammed and his followers struggle to worship God as they see fit, which eventually leads them into exile in Medina. However, one day God gives Mohammed a message to return to Mecca and take up arms against their oppressors -- while recruiting as many followers as they can along the way. With the help of his uncle, a brave warrior named Hamza Anthony Quinn, Mohammed and his followers return to Mecca to liberate the city in the name of God. The Message originally screened in the U.S. as Mohammed, Messenger of God proved to be highly controversial during its production and initial release. Unfounded rumors had it that Mohammed would not only be depicted in the film, but that he was to be played by Charlton Heston or Peter O'Toole. This resulted in angry protests by Muslim extremists, until director Moustapha Akkad hired a staff of respected Islamic clerics as technical advisors. The advisors butted heads with Akkad, and they quit the production, which led the Moroccan government to withdraw their permission to film in their country. In time, Akkad ended up shooting on location in Libya under the sponsorship of Muammar Qaddafi, which presented a whole new set of political and practical problems for the filmmakers. Finally, when the film was scheduled to premier in the U.S., another Muslim extremist group staged a siege against the Washington D.C. chapter of the B'nai B'rith under the mistaken belief that Anthony Quinn played Mohammed in the film, threatening to blow up the building and its inhabitants unless the film's opening was cancelled. The standoff was resolved without explosion or injuries, though the film's American box office prospects never recovered from the unfortunate controversy. The Message was shot in two versions, one in English and one in Arabic entitled Al-Ris-Alah, with different actors taking over some of the roles due to language requirements."

God is in the roses...and the thorns.

There's a beautiful song by Rosanne Cash that reminds me of my Beloved Meher Baba. It's called God is in the Roses.

Today, as I was riding through the countryside near Athens, that song came to mind.

A song and a few photos from today.

Jai baba.

This magnificent creature galloped up to the fence to say hello when he saw me approach. Beautiful boy.

Some good advice.

Old Highway 64

In 1952, Meher Baba traveled to Murphy, North Carolina, along with Elizabeth, Mani, Mehera and Meheru. They were followed in another car by Sarosh, Goher, Rano, Kitty and Delia.

This past weekend I traveled to North Carolina, along a portion of the same route that Baba took in 1952 -- Old Highway 64. Here are a few photographs of some of the sites along that route.

From the Original Kitchen to Hendershots...Honeychild!

SJ Ursrey (a/k/a HONEYCHILD) will be performing at Hendershots in Athens at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013.  The last time many of us heard SJ perform was in the Original Kitchen in Myrtle Beach.

The Flagpole, a weekly newspaper in Athens, had this to say about SJ: "SJ Ursrey has played music in Athens for 15 years....Her newest endeavor, Honeychild, is a solo continuation of the beachy, ukelele-based tunes she explored with her previous group, Nanny Island....[It] is an unabashed ode to the sweet, surfy sounds of summer."

So, come on down!! You are sure to see some familiar faces.

New wheels for clinic at Meherabad

The Athens Baba Group recently purchased a wheelchair and healthcare supplies for the clinic at Meherabad. Several members of the Athens group will be traveling to Meherabad in the next year and we hope to deliver the goods to Dr. Anne at that time.

Celebrate Meher Baba...Come On!

In February, several folks from Athens traveled to Meherabad.   One of the highlights of the trip was the Birthday Play. This is a short clip from the finale.  The energy and happiness on stage that afternoon was infectious. Check out the video! You may see a few familiar faces.

Silence Day in Myrtle Beach

Recently a contingent from Athens headed to Myrtle Beach for Silence Day.   The Center was full, although it never seemed crowded.

Coming to the Center feels a bit like a homecoming. Every time.  Walking into the Gateway, we were greeted by Judi with a hug and a "Jai Baba."  No finer words could have been spoken.

There's something about the Center. Or Someone, I should say.   The air is sweeter, the sun is brighter and the world is a kinder, gentler place.

There were so many beautiful moments while there.  Music in the original kitchen. Listening to Brian sing "Save Me."  (If you haven't heard it, it's worth a trip to his blog (ghamelayoga.blogspot.com)). SJ and her ukelele.   Jeff singing "Welcome to My World." Sweet Annie -- need I say more?  My daughter  kneeling at the bed of her Beloved and whispering a sweet prayer.  Bill and Diana.  Nancy and Sam cooking up a storm.

The camaraderie, the stories, the love. It was a beautiful thing! Jai Baba.
